Prerequisites: The JakeType keyboard app needs to be installed. It can be installed by adding the Input App Pack to Sidephone's App Library.
Basic Use:
Each letter-pair key only needs to be tapped once. The keyboard will determine what letters need to be output and update the on-screen word in real time. If multiple words match a given set of keystrokes (for example, “see” and “are” have the same input sequence), the user can select an option from the suggestion bar by either by tapping the intended word on the touchscreen, or by using the bottom left key "↨" on the Compact QWERTY to highlight the intended word and pressing “Space” to output it.
Shift:
Press the “^Aa^” key next to the Enter key once to capitalize the next character typed. Double tap “^Aa^” to enable Caps Lock. Press the key again to exit Caps Lock.
Symbols and Numbers:
Symbols and numbers printed above the letters on the keypad can be output by pressing the “SYM” key followed by the key showing the symbol/number. Symbol/number output can be locked by double pressing the “SYM” key. Press the key again to exit symbol lock
Additional symbols can be accessed by holding down the SYM key. The suggestion bar will show additional symbols that can be scrolled through and selected with either the touchscreen or the ↨ key followed by “Space”.
Emoji:
Emoji can be accessed by pressing the Shift key followed by the SYM key. The emoji panel requires touchscreen input to select emoji.
Press “SYM” again to close the emoji panel.
Double Tap (Traditional) Mode:
Hold down the ↨ key to enter Double Tap Mode. In this mode, the keyboard behaves like a traditional T9 keypad. Pressing a letter key outputs the first key in each pair. Tap the same key again within a short time to overwrite the first letter with the second letter in the pair. The time before locking in a letter in a letter pair can be adjusted in JakeType's settings. The options are "Default" (1 second) "Fast" (.8 seconds) and "Slow" (1.2 seconds).
Pressing an additional letter key will move the cursor forward automatically.
All non-letters have the same functionality in Double Tap mode.
Exit Double Tap Mode by pressing the ↨ key.
Personal Dictionary:
Words not recognized by JakeType can be added to the user's personal dictionary either by tapping a word underlined in red and pressing "Add to Dictionary" or by navigating to Settings > System > Languages and Input > Personal Dictionary.
Words in the personal dictionary will be picked up by JakeType and appear as suggested words.
Settings:
Enter JakeType settings by holding down the “Space” key.
On this screen users can enable potentially offensive words in keyboard suggestions as well as allow names in Contacts to be added to the keyboard’s suggestion dictionary for easier typing.
Other:
Double tapping “Space” will output a period followed by a space and capitalize the next keypress (except in Double Tap Mode), just like most software keyboards.
