Updated over a week ago

Summary

Type with the Android Keyboard (AOSP) by tapping keys on the screen, using long-press for alternate characters, and using the space bar for text suggestions when available.

Steps

Basic typing

  • Tap any text field to open the keyboard

  • Tap letters to type normally

  • Tap Space to insert a space

  • Tap Backspace to delete characters to the left

Capital letters and symbols

  • Tap Shift (↑) once for a capital letter

  • Double-tap Shift (↑) to turn on caps lock

  • Tap ?123 to open numbers and symbols

Alternate characters

  • Press and hold a key to reveal alternate characters (for example accented letters or additional symbols)

  • Slide your finger to the character you want and release

Confirm or send

  • Tap Enter / Return to start a new line

  • Tap Send (in messaging apps) when you are finished

Considerations

  • Key size may feel smaller due to Sidephone’s compact screen

  • Accuracy can improve if you slow down your tapping speed and use the points of your fingers

  • Some apps can customize the key appearances

  • The keyboard layout may change when a hardware keypad is attached

  • Emojis may be available via a dedicated emoji key depending on build

When to Contact Support

Create a support ticket if the Android Keyboard (AOSP) does not appear at all, or if multiple keys are consistently unresponsive across different apps.

What to Collect for Support

  • Whether the keyboard opens when you tap a text field

  • Which app you are typing in

  • Whether keys are missing, misaligned, or unresponsive

  • Whether a keypad module is attached

  • Sidephone OS version or date of last update
