Updated over a week ago

Summary

The Compact QWERTY keypad requires a downloadable software keyboard called JakeType to function. The app is free and obtainable via the App Library by scanning the Input App Pack.

Steps

  1. Insert the Compact QWERTY keypad to the device following the steps outlined in Insert a keypad

  2. Install the Input App Pack using Sidephone's App Library

    1. Open the App Library

    2. Click the QR code button, or go to Settings -> App Packs -> '+'

    3. Scan the Input App Pack QR code

    4. Install the JakeType application that appears

  3. Exit the App Library and open Settings

  4. Enable the newly downloaded software keyboard in Settings

    1. Search 'JakeType' in Settings

    2. Click the search result, which should bring you to Manage on-screen keyboards

    3. Enable the JakeType software keyboard by clicking the toggle and approving any subsequent notifications

  5. Navigate to any application with an input text field (e.g., Messages) and click on an input field

  6. Switch the on-screen software keyboard to JakeType

    1. Click the keyboard icon in the bottom right hand corner of the on-screen keyboard

    2. Choose English (US) JakeType as the input method

You can switch between software keyboard types at any time.

Considerations

  • Keypad not registering button presses: Remove the keypad and re-insert it. If this fails, restart the device. Sidephone requires a keypad to have been in the device when the device has first been turned on for keypads to function.

When to Contact Support

Contact support if after completing all steps above, as well as basic troubleshooting, the Compact QWERTY keypad fails to register any button presses.

What to Collect for Support

  • The troubleshooting steps you have attempted

  • Whether JakeType was installed successfully

  • Whether the software keyboard was enabled successfully and selected as the current active keyboard
