Configure your keypad

How to customize keypad buttons with Key Mapper and install the required software keyboards.

Updated over a week ago

Summary

To configure your keypad, open Settings → Key Mapping and create new key maps by recording a key (trigger) and assigning an action to it. For the Compact QWERTY and Numeric keypads, install the appropriate software keyboard from the Input App Pack to unlock full text-entry functionality.

Steps

Prepare your keypad

  1. Ensure a keypad is inserted and seated correctly in Sidephone.

  2. Unlock the device and go to the Home screen.

Create your first key map (custom button)

  1. Open Settings → Key Mapping.

  2. Tap + New key map.

  3. Tap Record Trigger.

  4. Press the keypad button you want to customize.

  5. Select an action (e.g., Launch application → Phone).

  6. Tap Save.

  7. Press the same keypad button to confirm the new action works.

Install software keyboards (if applicable)

  1. Open the App Library.

  2. Tap the QR code button → Scan QR code for the Input App Pack.

  3. Install JakeType (appears in your App Library).

  4. Open any text field (e.g., Settings → Search).

  5. Tap the keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner.

  6. Select JakeType as your keyboard.

Refine over time

  1. Repeat Steps 3–9 to customize additional keys.

  2. Adjust mappings as your workflow evolves.

Considerations

  • Setup Wizard stage: Keypads are configured after the Setup Wizard is completed.

  • Keypad not detected in Key Mapping: Reinsert the keypad and restart Sidephone with a keypad inserted.

  • Compact QWERTY not typing correctly: Ensure JakeType is installed and selected as the active keyboard.

  • Numeric keypad text entry: Requires a predictive T9-style keyboard from the Input App Pack.

  • QR code missing in App Library: Go to App Library → Settings → Repositories → ‘+’ → Scan QR code.

  • Swapping keypads: Restart the device if new keypads fail to connect after removal of the previous one.

When to Contact Support

Create a support ticket if Sidephone consistently fails to recognize any keypad in Key Mapping after reinsertion and restart with a keypad installed, or if custom key maps cannot be saved or triggered.

What to Collect for Support

  • Which keypad model is installed (Numeric, Sundial, or Compact QWERTY)

  • Whether the keypad is recognized in Settings → Key Mapping

  • Exact step where configuration fails (Record Trigger, action selection, save, or test)

  • Whether JakeType/Input App Pack is installed (for QWERTY or Numeric)

  • Whether the device was restarted with a keypad inserted
