Setting up Sidephone as a first phone (eg. for kids)

A step-by-step guide to configuring Sidephone as a simple and reliable first phone.

Updated over a week ago

Summary

Set up Sidephone as a simple, reliable first phone by completing the Setup Wizard, activating a mobile plan, and pre-configuring a small set of keypad buttons for essential contacts and apps. Keep apps, notifications, and permissions intentionally limited so the device remains calm, predictable and safe.

Steps

Complete basic setup

  1. Insert a keypad and power on Sidephone

  2. Complete the Setup Wizard using the touchscreen

  3. Connect to Wi-Fi

Obtain your new private number

  1. Visit plans.sidephone.com and choose either a Basic ($10/mo) or Unlimited ($35/mo) plan

  2. Enter the newly activated SIM card into Sidephone

  3. Power on Sidephone

Install only what is necessary

  1. Open App Library and install only:

    • (Optional) Maps

  2. If using Compact QWERTY, install JakeType first

  3. Avoid installing web browsers

Configure the keypad

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Key Mapping

  2. Map one key to Call Parent/Guardian #1

  3. Map one key to Call Parent/Guardian #2

  4. Map one key to Messages

  5. (Optional) Map one key to Maps or School contact

  6. Test each button with a real call or message

Lock screen & permissions (keep it simple)

  1. Consider no lock screen PIN so the keypad can bypass the lock screen via a Home button

  2. Turn off unnecessary notifications for any installed apps

  3. Avoid granting broad permissions unless clearly needed

Set expectations and habits

  1. Establish that Sidephone is for calling/texting

  2. Agree on when the phone is used (school, travel, emergencies, etc.)

  3. Charge Sidephone nightly, or as needed, in a family room or similar, on a dry and fire-resistant surface

Considerations

  • Emergency calls: A SIM is required for reliable emergency calling

  • Calls work but texts donโ€™t: Verify the plan supports SMS (not data-only)

  • Child accidentally installs apps: Remove them from App Library

  • Keypad feels confusing: Start with only 2โ€“3 mapped buttons and add more later

  • School policies: Confirm whether SIM or Wi-Fi use is permitted during school hours

When to Contact Support

Create a support ticket if calls or texts do not work on a confirmed active SIM after restarting the device, or if the keypad consistently fails to register mapped buttons despite reinsertion and restart.

What to Collect for Support

  • Is the device being used with a SIM or Wi-Fi only?

  • Carrier name (if using a SIM)

  • Which keypad is installed (Numeric, Sundial, or Compact QWERTY)?

  • Whether JakeType is installed (if Compact QWERTY)

  • Which buttons were mapped in Key Mapping

  • Whether calls and texts work to key contacts
